Psychiatrist links increase in sodomy cases to poverty

Levy Mwanawasa Medical University Principal Clinical officer – Psychiatry William Phiri has attributed the increase in cases of sodomy recorded recently in the country to high poverty levels.

In the last two months, Zambia has recorded about three cases of sodomy in Ndola, Chisamba and the recent one being Lusaka’s Kanyama compound.

Speaking when he featured on the pulse segment of the Phoenix FM breakfast show, Phiri says sodomy has nothing to do with mental health problem but poverty.

Phiri says this is the reason most perpetrators are people with money and older than the victims who are in most cases struggling to earn a living.

Sodomy is sexual intercourse that is considered unnatural or not consistent with local laws.
