Initial reports indicated that the former youth leader had been apprehended by DCI detectives, but the reason behind his arrest was unclear.
Source indicates that Echesa was nabbed on allegations of involvement in gun fraud.
A highly placed source, based at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters along Kiambu Road, disclosed that he was still being grilled, hours after his arrest.
According to the source, Echesa had promised some Turkish nationals that would help them win a government tender, to supply guns and ammunition.
“He has been arrested on links to suspected gun fraud as he has been telling Turkey Nationals that he was in a position to sell them guns and ammunition, he was also arrested with documents from the office of the Deputy President,” the source said.
He added that the CS would be taken to court as soon as investigations were over.
The CS was fired by President Uhuru Kenyatta from the sports docket in March 2019.
Two months after his sacking, he was nabbed in Kakamega town, while leaving a function that was attended by Deputy President William Ruto, in connection with killings that happened in Matungu.
Others who were arrested over the same incident include Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala, Mayoni MCA Libinus Oduor.
