DP Ruto’s ally Speaks After his Lawyer is Elected ICC Chief Prosecutor

Hours after Deputy President William Ruto’s former lawyer at the Hague based ICC court Karim Khan was elected the court’s prosecutor, Ruto’s close ally and former Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale has come out to speak.

Khan, is a British lawyer who represented DP Ruto and former Head of Public Service Francis Muthaura in 2010 after the two were arraigned before the international court over crimes against humanity in the just concluded 2007-2008 post elections violence.

He was elected the ICC prosecutor on Friday evening in a secret ballot against three other candidates after garnering 72 votes against the required 52.

And while reacting to Khan’s election to replace Fatou Bensouda, Khalwale the Ruto ally who seemed unhappy, saying he is not going to support the Hague court base unti the court expands its jurisdiction to include other powerful countries.

Khalwale in particular, said countries like China, US and Russia should be included as member states and not necessarily African counties only. He termed the court as an international tool for third world countries only.

“Until the International Criminal Court expands its legitimacy so that its jurisdiction inclides the US, Russia & China it remains an international tool for third world countries,” read Khalwale’s tweet.

Karim Khan was elected in the second round for a nine-year term. 122 countries voted for him. He became the third prosecutor in the history of the ICC and succeeded African Fatou Bensouda.
