President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday made a statement that could raise political temperatures in the country in the coming days.
Speaking to a section of Nairobi residents, the Head of State vowed not to hand over power to a thief when his term comes to an end in less than 18 months.
He also dismissed claims he was planning to extend his rule through the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) constitutional changes which propose expansion of the executive.
“I know there are some people telling you that I am planning to cling to power and that is not true. I will be going home come next year and I have no problem with that. But I want to make sure those who will take over from me will not make Kenyans suffer or steal from them. I want to leave behind those who will unite citizens instead of dividing them,” Uhuru said.
Although the President did not mention who he was referring to as a thief, his remarks did not go well with a section of leaders allied to Deputy President William Ruto who reacted bitterly to them.
Belgut MP Nelson Koech told off the President saying it was voters who will determine their next next head of state and not the incumbent.
He asked Uhuru to finish his remaining term and go home and leave Kenyans to make a decision about their future.
“Only if it were up to you Mr.President, unfortunately it’s the people of Kenya to decide. Wewe maliza yako and head to retirement. We will sort ourselves out,” Koech tweeted.

Soy MP Caleb Kositany welcomed Uhuru’s announcement of going home when his term expires, but noted it was not him who will determine his successor but the voters and God.
“I like the part where he confirms he is going home in 2022. Who Kenyans elect as president in 2022 is between us & God the father,” Kositany said.
