KENYA : Siaya Senator James Orengo and Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo were among leaders who were forced to scamper for safety using a chopper after chaos erupted in a function in Siaya County.
The leaders were at a function following the inauguration ceremony of the area assistant Chief Risper Akoth where a section of youth disrupted the function over the order of speakers.
Also caught up in the fracas on Friday, April 30, were MPs Sam Atandi (Alego Usonga) and Aduma Owuor (Nyakach).
“When the chaos erupted we were forced to flee for safety as the ‘hired goons’ were stoning the chopper. We went to the chopper and managed to leave without any injuries,” Otiende stated after the chaos.
MP Otiende Amollo said that his counterpart Atandi had refused to offer the microphone to an MP aspirant stating he was his competitor.
The youth caused chaos after Atandi failed to allow the MP aspirant in the area to address the crowd and invited Orengo to give the closing remarks in the event.
There were reports of a gunshot that was fired in the air that caused the crowd that had gathered to run for safety, disrupting the leader’s speeches.
The leaders thereafter fled into the awaiting chopper as the youth threw stones and chairs at them.
Otiende Amollo accused the aspirant of being behind the chaos while calling on the police to investigate the matter.
“He (referring to the local politician) tried to cause chaos, we did not want to be part of it, we went to the chopper and left,” he stated.
The incident was condemned by Soy MP Caleb Kositany who raised concern over the violence that was exhibited.
“This is very backward behavior by these goons, shame on whoever hired them, shame on all that endangered their lives and that of others,” he stated.
