Mt Kenya youth have asked ODM leader Raila Odinga to pick Peter Kenneth as running mate.
Led by the chairman of Mt Kenya Youth Caucus, Linford Mutembei,the youth asked Raila to consider naming Kenneth as his Deputy. They made this appeal when Raila toured the region on Saturday.
Mutembei said former Gatanga MP stands the better option for the position, since he has been in politics for a long.
He also reiterated that while the majority of the people from the region have agreed to back Raila, picking his running mate is another obstacle since there is no consensus as to who should be the person.
The ODM leader took his campaign to Nyandarua County to mobilise the residents to support his 2022 presidential bid.
During the visit, Raila was accompanied by a number of leaders from the region, including Nyandarua Governor Francis Kimemia, Maina Kamanda, Amos Kimunya and Kenneth among others.
Kenneth is among the people from the region who have been accompanying Raila to various functions within and outside the region.
ODM leader Raila Odinga and President Uhuru Kenyatta allies have been crafting a watertight political deal for 2022 State House race that could see former Assistant Minister Peter Kenneth picked from a pool of five other politicians from Mount Kenya region as his running mate.
Earlier this week, the team held a series of meetings in Dubai United Arabs Emirates (UAE) that could culminate in Raila’s running mate being unveiled later in the year.
Sources intimate that the meetings, which was attended by Uhuru’s allies and National Assembly Minority Whip Junet Mohamed, resolved to have Mount Kenya at the core of the ODM leader’s campaigns with an individual from the region picked to be his running mate.
In Mount Kenya region Kenneth has emerged as a front runner for the number two position and accompanies the former Prime Minister in tours across the country.
Kenneth hang on in there even when some in Raila’s camp were beginning to have second thoughts on his viability. Last month the leaders held rallies in Laikipia Meru, Tharaka Nithi , Murang’a and Kiambu counties.
The former Gatanga MP has been with Raila in most of the events in Mount Kenya where he has been given the opportunity to address the meetings.
Others possible running mates of Raila include Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya whose Mount Kenya East backyard is grumbling, and threatening to break off the larger Mount Kenya. The region also has National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi while President Kenyatta’s Kiambu backyard has former Governor William Kabogo for consideration.
In Kirinyaga, former Justice minister Martha Karua is flying the flag of potential running mates for Raila.
Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka who has been Raila’s running mate in 2013 and 2017 presidential contest will likely be replaced by a Mount Kenya politician as the ODM leader seeks to win the region’s support that is currently perceived to be tilted in favour of Deputy President William Ruto.
Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jnr disclosed that previous talks have stalled because of the arrangement that leaves Kalonzo without a major role.
