Andrei Illarionov, who served as an economic adviser to Putin between 2000 and 2005, believes that Putin can only be stopped through ‘resistance’.

Contrary to what other experts have said, Putin’s former staff member claims the president is not ‘losing his mind’ and is ‘as calculated as ever’ in his attack on the neighbouring country.

The ex-politician explained: “He knows what he wants and is trying to implement policy to achieve his goals.

“The only thing that can really stop Putin in Ukraine and in Europe, is resistance. Resistance that is being produced by the Ukrainian military, while all Ukrainian people that heroically resisting these aggressions.”

Illarionov described Putin as being ‘concentrated’, ‘calculated’, and ‘persistent’.

However, other world leaders have begun to question Putin’s mental state as they described his actions in the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war as ‘erratic.’

A source close to the French president Emmanuel Macron claimed the Russian leader was ‘stiffer and more isolated’ during a recent meeting.

The former US Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice expressed her own concerns to Fox News, as she claimed: “This is a different Putin. He was always calculating and cold but this is different. He seems erratic.”

Another ex-US Secretary, Robert Gates, claimed the Russian president had ‘gone off the rails’ in a recent interview with CNN.

The news comes after previous comments made by Vladimir Putin about a weapon “worse than a nuclear bomb” has added to fears around Russia looking set to take the invasion of Ukraine to a dangerous next level.

His comments, from an October 2017 youth festival in Sochi, may have been a signal of his early intent to go to any extreme on the battlefield.

The Russian President seemed convinced the world would soon witness super-human soldiers who cannot feel pain or fear.

He said: “A man has the opportunity to get into the genetic code created by either nature, or as religious people would say, by God.

“All kinds of practical consequences may follow. One may imagine that a man can create a man not only theoretically but also practically.

“He can be a genius mathematician, a brilliant musician or a soldier, a man who can fight without fear, compassion, regret or pain.

“As you understand, humanity can enter, and most likely it will in the near future, a very difficult and very responsible period for its existence. What I have just described might be worse than a nuclear bomb.”
