Boris Johnson and Trump START TRADE TALKS? Pair discuss post-Brexit ties on phone

The two leaders discussed trade, 5G and global security on the phone earlier today, the White House has confirmed. The pair will also meet at G7 in France later in August. Mr Trump told Mr Johnson during the call, which took place on Thursday, that he looked forward to meeting him at the G7 economic summit in France later this month, the White house said.

A White House spokesman said: “The President reiterated his strong appreciation for the special relationship between the United States and United Kingdom and noted he is looking forward to meeting with the Prime Minister at the G7 Summit in Biarritz, France later this month.”

The US is currently pressuring countires, including the UK, to stop using equipment from the Chinese telecommunications company Huawei in its 5G mobile networks.

The US says Huawei a national security risk.

The UK’s national security council, which is chaired by former Prime Minister Theresa May, said Huawei could get limited acess to sensitive parts of the 5G network.

But the council has yet to make a final decision.

Mr Johnson also gets on more with Mr Trump than Mrs May did.

Mr Trump also said last week that a “very substantial” US-British trade deal was under discussion.

The two leaders have spoken before while Mr Johnson was Foreign Secretary.
