Majority Leader Aden Duale has seemingly suggested that Deputy President William Ruto should now divert his focus on premier position due to impending referendum.
Although the draft on impending changes is yet to come out, all indications are that the country could be headed for a Parliamentary system which will be headed by Prime Minister.
DP William Ruto has been traversing the country pushing to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta, and has often dismissed plans to do away with the current presidential system.
On Sunday, Duale said he will lobby to ensure both President Uhuru Kenyatta and DP William Ruto support the parliamentary system, a current view held by Raila Odinga.
“I am going to convince the President and deputy President and membership of Jubilee Party to support the parliamentary system,” he said.
A staunch supporter of DP Ruto, Duale’s change of heart could further throw Dr Ruto out of balance, forcing him to change strategy.
Major political parties are now supporting the system, believing that it will do away with with perennial post election violence brought about by presidential polls.
Ford Kenya Secretary General Eseli Simiyu on Sunday reiterated the party’s position, arguing that all inclusive government will quell political temperatures.
“There was more tranquillity and unity in the country during the Grand Coalition regime of Mr Kibaki and Mr Odinga because everybody felt involved in the government”.
“A parliamentary system is a better solution than this purely presidential one,” he added. “If that will mean a convergence of views with all these political formations, so be it,” he said.
