Rwandan Army deserter turned Gov’t critic, Nkurunziza killed and buried in South Africa


Controversial Rwandan dissident Camille Nkurunziza who was recently killed in an alleged carjacking incident in South Africa has been buried.

Nkurunziza according to South African sources, was buried in South African city of Cape Town on Friday evening.

South African police has since not released much detail surrounding his death but it was said that he was killed in a fire exchange between hijackers and police.

He was shot with a South African national identified as Thabo Majeke aged 34 in the town of Goodwood last week.

Nkurunziza’s family however, revealed to media that before his burial on Friday, a friend to the deceased (names withheld) was also attacked and shot in the shoulder by unknown assailants at his house in Westbank, Blue downs on Tuesday night.

Nkurunziza’s wife, Annette Kasibandi confirmed the incident to RFI news agency and said she believes the friend was a “target”.

“Those who killed my husband want us to shut up. It is a warning to those who come to offer their condolence” she said

Nkurunziza was a deserter of the Rwandese army who had fled to South Africa and became a renowned critic of President Paul Kagame.

At the time of his death, Nkurunziza was linked to National Liberation Front (FNL) a militant group opposed to Rwandese government.

Nkurunziza’s killing adds on the inquests that the South African government is handling regarding the deaths of Rwandese dissidents.

In 2014, another Rwandese dissident, former intelligence chief Patrick Karegeya was assassinated which created diplomatic tensions between South Africa and Rwanda
